HRC International Spring Grand 2025

### The HRC International Grand: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future

For enthusiasts of Labrador Retrievers and serious gundog trainers, few events command the respect and anticipation of the **Hunting Retriever Club (HRC) International Grand**. Often described as the Super Bowl of hunt tests, this biannual event showcases the highest level of performance for retrievers across North America.

#### A Storied History

Founded in 1984 under the auspices of the United Kennel Club (UKC), the HRC was developed by hunters, for hunters. It focused on realistic hunting scenarios that emphasized teamwork, obedience, and natural hunting ability. As the organization grew, so did the ambition of its members—culminating in the establishment of the **International Grand Hunt Test** in 1986.

The Grand is held twice each year, in the spring and fall, rotating between regions across the U.S. It serves as the pinnacle for dogs who have already earned their Hunting Retriever Champion (HRCH) title. To qualify, these elite dogs must pass a series of demanding land and water series that simulate real-world hunting environments. The pressure is intense. The failure rate is high. And the prestige of passing the Grand is unmatched.

#### A Test of Heart, Drive, and Teamwork

Unlike traditional field trials, the HRC Grand emphasizes not just the dog's technical skills, but also its ability to perform as a partner to the handler. Judges evaluate each team on marking ability, blind retrieves, steadiness, and control—all within the framework of a true-to-life hunt. It's not enough to be good; dogs must be consistent, focused, and mentally tough over five days of testing.

Handlers, breeders, and trainers who participate in the Grand often dedicate months (or years) preparing for this event. A pass at the Grand is not just a title—it's a badge of honor for the dog, the trainer, and the breeding program that produced them.

#### Looking Ahead: The Future of the Grand

The HRC International Grand continues to evolve. As the community of handlers and breeders grows more sophisticated, so too does the competition. Advancements in training methods, nutrition, genetics, and dog handling have raised the bar for what it takes to succeed.

More recently, the Grand has also become a platform for showcasing ethical breeding programs, handler development, and youth involvement. New initiatives aimed at increasing accessibility and public awareness hint at an exciting future. With the continued support of passionate volunteers and the UKC, the Grand is poised to remain the premier proving ground for the best hunting retrievers in the world.

Welcome to Paragons Water Bowl Conversations, where we will gather ‘round the doggie “water cooler” and talk all things Paragon Retrievers and Gun Dogs; dogs, training, breeding, insights, leadership, updates, upcoming events and training days, training openings, and more. We know formal website information can be great, but what about all the things that the website doesn’t cover? The more “casual, get to know you, tell me more about that” type of stuff? That is what the Water Bowl is for! It’s a perfect opportunity for us to open up a bit and build a relationship with you, because we know the importance of establishing connections with both dogs, and their owners. Plus, dogs are our life, so we love to talk about all the different ways we get to interact with them and maybe you can learn from what we have to share. We look forward to meeting up with you here where things are a little less formal, and let us get to know each other a little better! Now, we better get back to work before the boss notices. ;)
